Special days / Holidays in GB

16/12/2010

Guy Fawkes Day 2010In our English lessons we, the form 6b, talked about the British special day: “Guy Fawkes Day”. It is also called “Bonfire Night”. It is celebrated on 5th November because a man, called Guy Fawkes, wanted to blow up the Houses of the Parliament with gunpowder on 5th November 1605. But the plot did not succeed and they put him into prison, the Tower of London.

Remember, remember the fifth of November.
Gunpowder, treason and plot;
I see no reason why gunpowder treason,
should ever be forgot.

In the week before 5th November we made five “Guys” out of old clothes stuffed with old newspaper. In the late afternoon of 5th November we went by coach to the BritishGuy Fawkes Day 2010 Garrison in Gütersloh to celebrate that day.
We took part in the “Best Guy Competition”, ate Fish and Chips and bought glow sticks or glasses. We lit our sparkles and had a lot of fun. Then the soldiers lit a big bonfire and put the “Guys” on the top of it.
After that there was a fantastic fireworks display. At 8.15 p.m. we went home. This evening was great and we had a lot of fun.
